Like all great new findings in the food plot world, we ran into Greens & Beans by accident and asking the question “what if?” While custom blending products we wondered, what would happen if we included our 6 brassica offerings in Fall Fuel in a mix of soybeans and Austrian Winter Peas. The rest is history as Greens & Beans continues to be a favorite hunting plot for the persistent hunter who starts strong on opening day and finishes the late season even stronger! This plot is great for the hunter who hunts with all weapon types as the diversity of plant species becomes attractive just 7 days after planting and stays strong until early spring. Big Buck 6 is our soybean of choice for Greens & Beans due to its huge leaves jam packed with protein. Big Buck 6 is one of the easiest soybeans to establish that we’ve ever experienced and it often reaches heights of 6 feet tall. This variety of soybean is not tolerant of Glyphosate and has been bred conventionally and has yielded higher tonnage than its competitors in several university trials. This non-GMO soybean is grown naturally without the use of synthetic herbicides. The winter pea in Greens & Beans is rapid to germinate, grows quickly and can withstand heavy frosts; an ideal candidate for a cool season attraction plot. The complementariness of having much taller, erect plants in the blend allow the peas to vine up the stems and continue growing until consumed by the deer. Austrian Winter Peas have been called an “ice cream treat” for deer. Peas have been shown to produce as much as 150-300 lbs. of nitrogen per acre, providing FREE, natural fertilizer for your follow up plots! Crude protein levels are consistently recorded as high as 30% so it should not come as a surprise to you when your deer heavily seek out these plants!
